Grey bedroom ideas for design lovers

Originally published in Inspiralist here, November 2018

Humble old grey has been the du jour colour in recent years. The popularity of grey is down to its versatility as a timeless neutral.

It’s a brilliant shade that can be read from cold modern to the most soothing of colours. Tinged with brown, blue or black, subtle differences can amount to surprising changes to the style and aesthetics of any room.

Designing with grey is an adventure and we are all for it. Grey is officially here to stay.

BLUSH PINK MEETS GREY

How cosy is this? Crisp white sheets offset blush pink bedding in this bedroom, all tied together with green fabrics and metal accents.

Blush pink and grey is a cool colour combination that is very of the moment. Both colours are popular picks as design neutral, but together, they pop.

This particular iteration comes by way of Melbourne designer Cathy Atta. Dusky grey paint lends a subtly textured background in this super snug room. Remember to add deep green textures to make this combination really pop.

The winning combo of blush and grey:

  • Pink duvet

  • Green pillow

  • Gold lamp

  • Green throw

  • Brass fittings

TOASTY GREY AND GOLD

Half-painted walls is how to go grey without committing all the way.

A base of Mole’s Breath paint by Farrow and Ball warms up this bungalow bedroom by blogger The Gold Hive. Moody grey meets its match with warm gold fixtures. As for the half of the wall, try pairing it with grey-toned white paint Ammonite by Farrow and Ball.

Take inspiration from this bedroom and pair grey walls with black and gold. Look for black bedside tables, graphic art and eye-catching gold light fixtures. Plus, you can never go wrong with fresh flowers in any bedroom.

The grey and gold look:

  • Moody grey and white walls

  • Gold hardware

  • Black bedside table

  • Graphic art

  • Foliage

  • Neutral bed frame

MODERN BOHEMIAN

Fashion a bedroom into a bohemian paradise with this modern grey motif. It’s boho all grown up with acacia wood furniture, thoughtfully mixed patterns textiles and a giant kilim rug.

A grey base is the perfect foil for eclectic finds. The first step is to scour online sources like Ebay and Etsy for a giant kilim rug to anchor the space. If your room isn’t as spacious as this, oversized pieces actually open up rooms otherwise squeezed for space.

From there, add lots of personality with travel souvenirs and cool keepsakes for a unique stamp.

The modern bohemian look:

  • Wood bed frame

  • Wood mirror

  • Kilim rug

  • Mix and match neutral bed textiles

  • House plants

GENDER NEUTRAL GREY NURSERY

For a gender neutral nursery or children’s bedroom, soothing grey is the answer.

Take inspiration from Scandinavian home design with a bright and light look.

As always, grey is the faithful companion to pops of colour. Stuck for ideas? Chuck in a giant giraffe, as pictured here, hang colourful prints or pick up a bright red rocking chair. Grey and yellow make a handsome pair, so a vivid mustard throw would be right at home.

Whatever colourful elements you choose, just make sure they all work together in harmony.
